Charles Leclerc needs a change in approach at Ferrari | FormulaNASCAR

The sight of Charles Leclerc being chastised by Mattia Binotto following the 2022 F1 British Grand Prix was quite upsetting. Not only because Ferrari ruined the young driver's race, but also because they blew an opportunity in the championship.

Despite this, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto was adamant about how the team handled the situation. There was almost a lack of empathy or concern that the club had essentially jeopardized its lone chance at a title.

Most fans have viewed Ferrari's strategy staff as the villain of Charles Leclerc's 2022 campaign up to now. If this is how the team is going to approach the season, Leclerc should reconsider how he projects himself at Ferrari.

Since the day he entered the bright, glittery world of Formula 1, Charles Leclerc has been a Ferrari pupil. However, with the squad consistently falling short, Charles Leclerc needs to adapt his tactics if he is to win the title.

While Fernando Alonso failed to win the championship with Ferrari. The Spaniard was the closest the team came to replicating the dynamics that Michael Schumacher had within the squad. However, it did not occur instantly or as soon as Fernando Alonso joined the club. Alonso was not named team captain the moment he climbed into the Prancing Horse.

Before the famed "Fernando is faster than you" incident in the 2010 German GP involving Felipe Massa, there was another less reported "Fernando is faster than you" moment in the 2010 Australian GP that Massa had disregarded.

Felipe Massa was much slower than Fernando Alonso at the Australian Grand Prix, but he refused team orders to allow Alonso to pass. As a result, Massa finished third in that race, while Alonso, the faster driver, dropped back and lost vital points. All of this culminated in the 2010 Chinese Grand Prix, when Fernando Alonso, once again trailing his teammate, made the ultimate statement by overtaking Massa at the pit entry.

Fernando Alonso finished nearly 50 seconds ahead of his teammate, demonstrating why he had to make the risky maneuver in the first place. By the time the F1 circus arrived in Germany, Fernando Alonso had already had all of the difficult conversations he needed to have with the crew. Alonso had special treatment inside the team. Not only because he was faster, but also because he was the team's only hope of winning the championship.

Even if Charles Leclerc is still in the early stages of his career, he should learn from Alonso. Carlos Sainz is performing at a much lower level than Charles Leclerc this season.

This season, Carlos Sanz is 2-8 against Leclerc. His two victories were in Canada and Monaco. Even with a damaged front wing, Charles Leclerc was able to not only match but outrun Carlos Sainz at the British GP.

At the end of the day, if there was ever any doubt about which of the two Ferrari stars was the superior driver, Charles Leclerc has won it emphatically. Ferrari also knows where both drivers rank in the pecking order. This is why Charles Leclerc is under contract with Ferrari through the 2026 F1 season, whilst Carlos Sainz obtained a 2-year deal after much discussion.

Following the events of the British Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc must hold stern meetings with his crew and communicate the message as clearly as possible. He is the team's No. 1 driver, putting him the team's lone hope for an F1 championship, and he is more than 43 points behind the championship leader. If the team wants to mount a title challenge, Leclerc's results must be optimized.

As previously stated, Leclerc is still regarded as a "protege" within Ferrari. Charles Leclerc has already proven that he is the finest Ferrari driver. All he has to do now is prove to the squad that he is no longer a mere pupil. He is the team boss, and his word and results must take precedence if Ferrari is to win the championship this season.

Fernando Alonso took over at Ferrari over a decade ago and nearly won two titles. If the Monegasque is to make something of his maiden title campaign, he must follow the Spaniard's blueprint.
