"Pierre Gasly to keep AlphaTauri seat in 2023"

Next season, Pierre Gasly is "100% sure" to return to AlphaTauri, and teams feel Oscar Piastri is ready for a promotion to Formula One.

However, Williams expects their roster to remain constant until the end of the year, which would be fantastic news for Nicholas Latifi if true, while McLaren chief Zak Brown stated his relationship with Daniel Ricciardo has never been better.

All of this was disclosed on Saturday at the Canadian Grand Prix, the ninth race on the calendar this year and more than six weeks before F1's "silly season" of driver movement gets underway.

Since last month, when Brown publicly warned Ricciardo to improve his performance with McLaren, speculation has swirled. Despite the fact that Brown's contract with McLaren continues until 2023, he acknowledged that there are "mechanisms" in place for McLaren to terminate it sooner.

However, with the series returning to Canada for the first time since 2019, Latifi, a Toronto native, has conceded that his seat with Williams is in jeopardy. There have been rumours that Latifi could be replaced by Piastri, the defending F2 champion, after Sunday's race. Piastri has a one-year contract with Alpine as a reserve and test driver, but the team had committed to assist him in securing a spot in Formula One for 2023.

When asked if Piastri was ready for the promotion, Alpine principal Otmar Szafnauer answered "absolutely," but he had no further information beyond the rumour that the Australian was poised to replace Latifi.

And Williams CEO Jost Capito appeared to deny the idea that Latifi would be out of employment after Sunday's race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Piastri was "ready to get into Formula One," according to Capito, and was "one on the list for sure" for any team looking for a driver.

But is it possible that Piastri will be driving for Williams in the British Grand Prix? Both Alex Albon and Latifi are under contract, according to Capito.

"We're focused on this year," Capito added. "We have a driver lineup for this year." "We don't have anything else planned." Both players have a contract for the season, and we intend to honour it."

Gasly locked down

Gasly's situation at AlphaTauri is far from bleak, with team head Franz Tost adamant that the Frenchman will return in 2023.

Tost said on Saturday, "This is 100 percent proven."

Just a week ago in Baku, Gasly did not appear to be so convinced, stating that he wants to race for wins rather than points. Gasly has been linked to a breakaway from Red Bull, which has backed him for the most of his career but does not have a vacant F1 seat and has just extended Sergio Perez's contract.

Tost put a stop to the conjecture.

“He will be a driver of us, of Scuderia AlphaTauri, in 2023,” Tost said.

But when asked how Gasly was convinced to stay, the team boss was curt: “He has a valid contract, there’s nothing more to say.”

Daniel Joseph Ricciardo Future

Since Brown publicly criticised Ricciardo's tenure with McLaren as lacklustre, the Australian has been quizzed practically every week about his future in F1 and with McLaren.

Ricciardo claims that his contract runs until 2023, but Brown has hinted that there are stipulations in his contract that could force him to leave sooner. Brown stated "the connection with Daniel has never been stronger" in the month since he publicly chastised the popular driver, and the two just enjoyed dinner together in London.

Brown also said that McLaren is to blame for Ricciardo's difficulties. McLaren is now not providing vehicles to Ricciardo or Lando Norris to compete against Red Bull and Ferrari.

“We need to produce a faster race car,” Brown said. “Last year in Monza when we had a strong race car we could see what Daniel and Lando could do with it. We need to focus on giving our drivers better race cars and I think Daniel is highly motivated and he has all of our support. We're having fun and have a great relationship with him and hopefully we'll have a good weekend.”
